Deputies with the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash near Benchmark Road and Mine Road after receiving reports of a wreck overnight, according to the agency.

When Deputy Crystal Cabrera arrived, she found 55-year-old Charles Funkhouser, whose slurred speech, glassy eyes, and strong odor of alcohol made it clear he wasn’t just a bad driver—he was allegedly a drunk one, too.

Funkhouser, of King George, was arrested at the scene and charged with DUI (1st offense).

His 2023 Dodge Challenger didn’t fare much better, as it had to be hauled away by a tow truck after the wreck.

Authorities took the opportunity to remind drivers: "A night out shouldn’t end in a tow truck and a mugshot. Drive sober or hand over the keys."
